Aquatic Therapy
Pediatric Aquatic Therapy
What is Aquatic Therapy?
Aquatic therapy uses the special properties of water – like buoyancy and resistance – to help your child improve their strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility. It’s a gentle and effective way to target therapeutic goals without putting stress on their joints. The CI aquatic therapy program is developed by our occupational and physical therapy teams.
Who can benefit from aquatic therapy?
Aquatic therapy is great for kids of all ages, especially those with:
- Neuro-motor differences
- Congenital disorders
- Developmental delays
- Sensory processing differences
- Autism
- Injuries (sprains, strains, fractures)
- Arthritis
- Muscle weakness
- Balance problems
- Other mobility limitations
- And so much more!
What are the benefits of aquatic therapy?
Water offers many benefits:
- Fun and motivating: Kids love splashing around! This makes therapy a positive experience, encouraging them to participate actively.
- Reduced pain: Water supports most of their body weight, making movement easier and less painful.
- Improved range of motion: The water’s resistance helps build muscle and improve flexibility.
- Increased strength: Water provides gentle resistance when they move, like a built-in weight room! This helps them build stronger muscles.
- Improved balance and coordination: Water challenges their balance in a safe way, helping them learn to control their movements better.
- Increased weight bearing ability: The water supports their body weight, so they can practice putting weight on sore or injured areas without as much pain. This helps them get back to activities they love.
- Improved cardiorespiratory/cardiovascular and pulmonary endurance: Exercises in the water get their heart rate up and improve their breathing, just like other forms of exercise.
- Improved motor skills and planning: Fun activities in the water help them develop coordination, agility, and problem-solving skills.
- Boosted confidence: As your child gets stronger and more coordinated in the water, their confidence will grow!
